Code : BDA 17201
Course : MATERIAL SCIENCE ENGINEERING LABORATORY
Classification : Core Engineering Course
Prerequisite : N/A
Credit : 2 hours
Activities : 100% Practical (Lab)
Course Learning Outcomes (CLO):
- CLO1: Investigation - Conduct investigation into problem and analysis data gathering from experiment that display basic skills and knowledge of material science using various laboratory equipment. [LOD4, C4, PLO 4]
- CLO2: Individual and Team Work - Function effectively as an individual and team work effectively in a group through laboratory experiments and presentations [LOD7, A3, LO9]
- CLO3: Communication - Communicate effectively on complex engineering experiments and demonstrate comprehension of the general ideas of the subject through written reports that comply with specific standards. [LOD8, P3, PLO 10].
Content :
Lab B1 : Atomic Arrangement in the Solid Structure and Crystal Structure
- Determining the Bravais structure of the atomic configuration in solids.
Lab B2 : Porosity and Density
- Calculating the density and the percent porosity of ceramics using the Archimedes Principle.
Lab B3 : Hardenability Test (Jominy End-Quench) ASTM A 255
- Obtaining hardness value of carbon steel which subjected to Jominy End-Quench process and corelating ‘hardness’ versus ‘distance from the quenching end.
Lab B4 : Heat Treatment of Plain-Carbon Steels
- Examining the resulting microstructure from various heat treatment procedures on carbon steel.
Lab P5 : Failure of Brittle Materials
- Determining the Modulus of Ruptue (MOR) and study the fracture surface.
Lab M6 : Electroplating (open ended lab)
- Differentiate the coating properties, based on two designated electroplating process parameters; types of metal and time.
Assessment :
Note: All reports must be submitted or grade F and zero marks will be awarded.
